Refining
Process simulation with HYSYS or Unisim is widely used in the refining industry. The Inprocess Application Overview “The Operational Use of Process Simulation in Refineries” gives an overview of proven ideas to use process simulation in refining operation.

Dynamic Flare Load Study
2009/2010 Germany Refining Operator
Dynamic Simulation Study to determine the flare load of a crude unit and a coker during a general power failure. The approach applied in this study has been described in an articele that can be obtained from the download section of the Inprocess Webpage.
Knowledge Improvement Programme (KIP) for Simulation of Crude Unit
2009 Germany Refining Operator
Inprocess developed a steady state crude unit model with pre-heat train for this refinery. The pre-heat train model can be manually updated from plant data and pre-heat train monitoring is supported. As part of the KIP, refinery process engineering team was trained in maintaining the model and using the complex model for different case studies - like predicting the pre-heat train performance after cleaning a specific heat exchanger
2009 TRAINING UPDATE
2009 Various Refining Engineering
Operator
Equipment Manufacturer
In 2009, Inprocess carried out many in-house and public training courses, teaching more than 390 engineers at different levels. Inprocess introduced seven new training courses, e.g. the new intermediate and advanced process simulation courses with focus on specific industry segments like “Natural Gas Processing”, “Oil Refining” and “Oil & Gas.”
Refsys Extension
2010 USA Refining Operator
Inprocess improved the functionality, usability and robustness of an existing REFSYS extension that our client previously developed.
Conceptual Flare Load Study
2009 Germany Refining Engineering
Conceptual dynamic simulation study to determine the flare load of a crude unit during a general power failure and a water breakthrough. The conceptual dynamic study approach allows for reduced detail and, therefore, reduced cost, while maintaining the possibility to consider dynamic phenomena in the analysis.
Refsys Extension
2009 USA Refining Operator
Inprocess developed a HYSYS Extension that links HYSYS/RefSYS to an existing in-house calculation routine (DLL) developed by our client.
Simulation Software Roll-Out
2009/2010 Germany Refining Operator
Inprocess supports this client with the roll-out of its new process simulation software. The start is a standard three-day Inprocess training, which will be complemented by custom exercises and workshops in the future.
HYSYS and REFSYS Training
2008/2010 Belgium Refining Operator
Inprocess carried out a number of training sessions to deploy Aspen HYSYS and then later on Aspen REFSYS at this refinery.
2008 TRAINING UPDATE
2008 Various Refining Engineering
Operator
Equipment Manufacturer
In 2008, Inprocess carried out a substantial number of in-house and public training courses, teaching more than 240 engineers at different levels. Inprocess introduced four new training courses, e.g. the new training course that covers the application of process simulation to model LNG processes. In addition to the new training courses, Inprocess also updated all previously developed material to include the feedback that we received from our attendees
Knowledge Improvement Programme (KIP) for Simulation of Distillation
2008 Germany Refining Operator
Process Simulation Knowledge Improvement Programme (KIP) for Downstream Unit. Inprocess updated the existing model and trained the client's engineers in using the model to improve operations. The model has been used by the client to improve operations.
Dynamic Flare Load Study
2008 Germany Refining Operator
Dynamic Simulation Study to determine the flare load of a crude unit during a general power failure. The approach applied in this study has been described in an articele that can be obtained from the download section of the Inprocess Webpage.
Inprocess Knowledge Improvement Programme (KIP) for Refinery Process Simulation
2008 Italy Refining Operator
Inprocess Knowledge Improvement Programme (KIP) for Process Simulation of Crude and Vacuum Unit. Inprocess developed a steady state HYSYS model for the client and trained the client's engineers in using and maintaining the model. One example of the case studies developed was related to the operation of the column with reduced condenser duty.
Dynamic Flare Load Study
2007-2008 Italy Refining Engineering
Dynamic Simulation Project for Foster Wheeler Italy. Inprocess developed a number of dynamic models for different distillation columns to study the flare behaviour for general power failure. The intention was to study the simultaneity of the flare load peaks.
This study was presented at the 2008 AspenTech UGM.
